When I saw the Modifx Sheet Moss, I knew I had to make something special with it! The finished product below, and I'll walk you through the steps and products I used.
To start with I used real branches, which had seen a lot of decay, then stored in dry conditions outside for a long time, so they were very dry before I started working with them. I put them in the oven for 15 minutes to drive out any last moisture or bugs. I epoxy glued onto a 1.5mm ABS sheet for the base, trimmed into an organic shape.
Airbrush undercoated with Stynylrez black primer, then zenithal Stynylrez Grey primer, and drybrushed with an ivory colour. Added AK Dark Earth texture for the ground.
The magic begins with AK Enamel washes, I recommend their book Realistic Wood Effects as a great introduction to a variety of wood effects.
Then we move onto making this a fallen log in a dense forest with products from Modifx, Gamers Grass and AK.
Modifx Sheet Moss is so good, because it is from a natural product (glycol preserved moss). It has nice green transitions, plus dead/dry roots. Break off chunks to make dense underbrush, and small fronds can be glued seperately for smaller plants growing from the log. AK Beech Foliage Summer has small leaves, so cut a section and crumple it up or tease it out. Then a range of tufts from Gamers Grass, different sizes and green tones, to build the foreground; Mixed Green 6mm, Strong Green 6mm, Dark Moss 2mm and Tiny Dry Green. I like to use the Wild version tufts or cut the Small version tufts so they aren't uniform. Finally for the edge of the base I used Green Blend foam scatter, which has some size and colour variation built in, emptied into a Modifx empty basing jar for easier storage and application.
Some further details on the log; the fungus was made from greenstuff and painted with oil paints for easy/natural transition, the small eggs were already on the log, so just painted them more to highlight them :)
